Om Unit – The Road (feat Charlie Dark)

Charlie Dark of legendary outfit Attica Blues (Mo’Wax) makes a hugely rare appearance, featuring on “The Road” by Om Unit, the 15th and final track of their album “Threads”.  Catch the official music video above.

Charlie Dark’s group began life in 1994 when he and Tony Nwachukwu first met up. Having previously founded London’s Urban Poets Society collective, the duo soon became Attica Blues.  He first met Mo’Wax label founder James Lavelle while trying to sell some Japanese hip-hop records and was offered a spot on his Mo’Wax label. The duo began recording their first single alone but when a local student, the Egyptian-born Roba El-Essawy, visited the studio during the recording of their debut single, they decided to ask her to join them. The band released their first single in 1995 and their debut album in 1997 on Mo’Wax before signing to Columbia.

Charlie also founded Blacktronica, a monthly showcase of the black electronic music scene in Britain.  He makes regular appearances on the literature and spoken word circuit, is an experienced tutor and workshop facilitator, and has been a Poet Coach for the London Teenage Poetry Slam for three years running.

To give the lyrics to The Road some context Charlie also set up and runs Run Dem Crew started in 2007 as an answer to running clubs that were missing the point of community exercise, gathering, and reinvigoration. Working closely with the Nike 1948 space, RDC is now an entity known for uplifting the youth in East London and offering opportunities to explore the city in new, fun, and educational ways.
